I created a new iconography library for our marketing design team that is a collection of over 200 friendly and approachable icons. These icons are inspired by the Tableau software and are built from consistent line weights so that they are scalable, flexible, and cohesive.
After spending several years frustrated with the disjointed iconography system we had in place, I sought out to fix the problem. The solution was to overhaul the way our icons were built and create a new way of designing them. The system needed to be scalable to accommodate new iconography, work across various use cases, and remaining consistent across the entire library.
To achieve this I established the foundation for creating an icon set that is built with vector strokes and laid out on a consistent grid. Once the system was in place, it was actually a really rewarding experience redesigning 200+ icons all created from the same building blocks. Suddenly the icons felt modern and friendly in their style, but most importantly, they were cohesive.
With the system in place, I took inspiration from the Tableau product to create an icon system that not only looked good but could also scale. By introducing overlapping elements, built from the same stroke weight, we could now expand the library to create a consistent tone in our designs.
The default look for the icon library is built from vector strokes, but I also introduced a haver state where the duo-tone fill color can be used to help the icons come to life. Lastly, by combining the new icons with our corporate color palette we have a vibrant new way to show iconography in our presentations and signage on our dark indigo background.
